Have you ever wondered where luffa sponges came from? They’re nature’s scrubbers!

You’ve probably had or used a loofah sponge, whether in the bath or for cleaning around the house. But did you know it was made from a vegetable?

While much of the marketing of loofahs shows the sponge in a seaside setting, surrounded by seashells and lapping water, loofahs are not the remains of an oceanic creature. In fact, they have little to do with the ocean. They are the fibrous flesh of the mature luffa gourd – a vine that is a cousin of cucumbers, melons, and watermelons. You can give the luffa sponges away to family and friends.
